Kvitova got off to a strong start against Kenin at Madrid’s Caja Magica, eding past a five-minute marathon game to break for a 2-0 lead. The Czech player seemed to have all of the answers for the young American, reeling off another three games in a row to make it 5-0. Kenin was able to stop the rot and hold for 5-1, but she wasn’t able to stop Kvitova’s momentum as she took the opening set with ease.
Kenin continued to raise her level as the second unfolded, and she was able to pile the pressure onto the Czech’s shoulders, even though Kvitova started the set with a 2-0 lead. The American created a break chance of her own and dodged Kvitova’s opportunities as she tried to get them back on even terms, finally breaking through to level at 4-4.
